Farmers in quandary with huge unsold potato
RAJSHAHI, Oct 11: Farmers and businessmen have been facing an awkward situation with huge unsold potato owing to its low price here in the markets, reports BSS. Sources said the farmers and businessmen are incurring a loss of about Taka 300 per sack of potato. In this situation, they are fearing that there will be a decline in potato cultivation in the next season. Talking to BSS they viewed that the production cost is not being recovered after selling the potato stored in the cold storage due to reduced price. At present, the price of a sack of 85-kg potato is Taka 980 to 1,020 and there has been apprehension of further worsening the rate with the appearance of early varieties of winter vegetables. Side by side with the bumper production during the current season, the farmers produce all other vegetables in huge quantity owing to favourable climatic condition round the year and they did not witness any increase of potato price. During the harvesting period, the price of 85-kilogram sack was Taka 1,000 to Taka 1,100. Whereas, the production cost was Taka 1,300 to 1,400 per sack including the rent of cold storage and transportation cost, they added. Rahim Uddin Sarker, a national award winner potato-farmer of Paba upazila here, informed that he had cultivated potato in 12 bighas of land spending Taka 25,000 to 26,000 per bigha and stored 500 sacks of potato in cold storage. He sold out 300 sacks of potato at the rate of Taka 1,050 to 1,100 and the rest 200 sacks remained stockpiled in the cold storage. "I am worried that I have to incur a loss of at least Taka 60,000 if I sell 200 sacks of stored potato at a rate of Taka 1,020," he said adding "all my neighbour farmers will incur losses if they sell their produce at the same rate." Office-secretary of District Potato and Vegetable Traders'' Association Bazlur Rahman said that he had purchased 578 sacks of potato and stored in a cold storage and 188 sacks of those are in the storage. He said the businessmen, who have borrowed money from the banks and owners of the cold storages to operate their business, have been passing their days with anxiety over repayment of their loans. In the current season, about 28 lakh sacks of potato were stored in 18 cold storages in the district and all were overloaded due to the bumper production. About sixty percent of the total stored potato remained stockpiled in the cold storages as the farmers and traders are reluctant to receive their crop due to its reduced price whereas seventy-five percent of the stored-potato were sold during the same period of last year. Sources with Department of Agriculture Extension said, the farmers cultivated potato in 35,000 hectares of land in the district.
